New CSM Track Coach Julia Widstrand takes over as long time coach Joe Mangan takes a retreat this semester.
"Well I'm not really replacing him," said Widstrand. "I'm just subbing or filling in for him."
Mangan is taking this semester off after coaching cross-country and track at CSM for nine years. Winstand was an assistant coach last year under Mangan, but she does not seem to be feeling the pressure.
"It's not too different," said Winstrand, "it's not that much different than last year. It's just a bigger group this time."
Even though Widstrand is taking over for only a semester, the team does not seem to have any ill effects after having a great opening meet by placing in the top five in 11 events.
"They are already showing great improvement," said Widstrand, "so I think it's going well and we should be fine."
Usually, a new head coach brings in a new goal for the team, but Widstrand has taken a different approach. When asked about her goals for the team, Widstrand replied that the goal for any coach his to see the athletes improve.

You'd think you'd get my friend Julia's name spelled consistently. It was "Widstrand". But no longer.
