Alpha Gamma Sigma elected new officers on May 13 and attended a regional convention last month.

AGS supports its members in defining and reaching their goals by encouraging achievement and community service, building social and professional networks, and providing the information and focus needed for success, according to the AGS website, www.webjam.com/ags.

Shaniel Maharaj from Millbrae, an Accounting major, was elected AGS President.

Maharaj, 33, said his leadership experience was the prime reason he was elected for AGS President. "I have ten years of military experience," Maharaj said.

Since he has been elected, Maharaj has initiated recruiting with the former AGS President, Doug Robinson. "We are estimating at least twenty members for the fall," Maharaj said.

The newly elected Maharaj has already started plans for the summer, "I'd like to have a meet-and-greet," he said.

Newly elected Vice President, Bill Folsom majoring in Economics, carried out plans for diversity week. "We will give out bookmarks," Folsom, 34, said. "We are printing the word 'diversity' in different languages on them," he said.

Additional positions elected were Daniel Collins for secretary; Ho Long Fung for treasurer; and Sandie Bello for ICC representative.

Seven AGS members and Adviser Dr. Al Acena attended the 83rd Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society's "Everyday Heroes" Spring Convention in Ontario, Calif. from April 24 to 26. More than 417 students from across the state stayed at the Double Tree Hotel for the convention, according to Robinson.

"We were really lucky to go, the President [Michael Claire] flew us out there," Robinson said.

"I appreciate the work of all of our clubs, including AGS," said President Michael Claire.

Robinson, a student from Brisbane, was elected AGS Northern California Student Trustee. The Board of Trustees reviews eligible AGS student members and rewards a sum of $38,000 in scholarships, according to Robinson, 39. "One of our college's members, Michele Fu held the position of Northern California Student Trustee for the one year period prior to myself, it's nice for our college to hold the position," said Robinson.

AGS returned from the conference with the prize for Best Overall Name Tag. The name tag theme was "everyday heros," so the group members each had a small mirror on each name tag, reflecting those who looked into it, said Olena Mykhaylichenko, 23, a Political Science major from Kiev, Ukraine, and former vice president of AGS.

Conference workshops included networking exercises, recruiting membership and fundraising ideas.

A green shopping workshop provided about 30 people with information about green shopping, said Robinson, an Environmental Engineering major.

Students with at least a 3.0 grade point average and 12 or more semester units are eligible to join AGS.
