You've had six previous awards, what does this year's Coach of the Year Award mean to you?

Williams: This award means we had a very good team and that team was able to realize the goal of winning the conference championship. The credit really goes to the players.
Coach Doug Williams has coached at CSM for 14 years, taken the conference championship eight times and has sent his players to The Northern California State Playoffs 13 times, including this season.

What is done on the CSM Baseball Program's part in terms of advancing your players to the next level?

Williams: We work as hard at placing players as we do at recruiting. This is a major piece of the puzzle; we are constantly in contact with schools throughout the country. We do all we can to advance players, especially with a financial attachment.
The CSM Baseball program has sent 166 of 175 players to either a four year university or signed professionally.

After speaking with some of the players, they had mentioned that you choose to play a wide variety of players in various situations. Why did you choose to do this?

Williams: Well, it really was a testament of having a lot of good players on this team. They have worked extremely hard all season. We had a variety of lineups and several of the players were clutch when called upon. It was good to see they were prepared for those particular situations.

You were obviously pleased with the team's performance this season, was there anything the team substantially improved on over the course of the season?

Williams: That's a good question. Our competitiveness. Being competitive is an essential component of college baseball. Through the stretch of the season we became better competitors. This team was up there as one of the most competitive groups of my 14 years as coach.

Is there anything else you would like to comment on?

Williams: Even though we lost in the super-regionals, I felt as good about this team by the end of the season as any other team. The camaraderie and competitive effort was outstanding. Their academic progress reports were outstanding as well, I'm very proud of this group.
The team made it to the super-regionals, and although they lost, the team fought until the end. Two of the three games that were lost ended in extra innings by only one run.
